It Was The One-Armed Man! [Dec. 29th, 2009|05:04 pm]

Well, if it was...that means it was me. My history of elbow issues being what it is, I found myself back at my doctor's today. I hardly slept last night because of the pain and my arm refuses to even cut a slice of meat. Heck, I couldn't even butter bread yesterday.

Once again, she thinks Golfer's elbow. However, there's some swelling that is being stubborn. So, it's physio, icing, and finding an anti-inflammatory that works. With the swelling and the ridiculous pain I find myself in, I've basically been given a "do not to anything you do at work" note.

I'm almost a one-armed bandit and I hate it. To compound the situation, my supervisor is out of the office until Tuesday. If there's any good news at all, it's that we're in tomorrow and then off until Monday.

Going into the Christmas season I had been hoping for one day to just kick back and relax. I really didn't think that was going to happen, and was pleasantly surprised when it did on Saturday. We went out about ten on Boxing Day to pick up two more expansions for Killer Bunnies. Carla also got herself two more sets of dice. Other than that, we came home and just lounged for the day. I ended up playing World of Warcraft for the first time in a few months and really enjoyed myself. Carla indulged in one of her new DS games, Mario Party.

Yesterday wasn't bad either. We swung into Cambridge for [info]retrorocketman's Boxing Day sale. I picked up three more WoW figures, while Carla got Pride & Prejudice the zombie version. Later in the day we went to my sister-in-law's for Christmas with Carla's mom and played some Scattegories. We were planning on heading down to City Hall for the Olympic Torch ceremony, but came to the conclusion that as people were there as early as three o'clock for it, we probably wouldn't get within four blocks.

All in all, not a bad weekend. Hope you can say the same.

Wrote about Roy Halladay leaving the Jays last week and what a class act the guy was. If you second guessed any of it, take a look at the ad Halladay himself put in the Toronto Sun yesterday:

Dear family I hold most dear:

I finished my Christmas shopping two weeks ago, except for a couple things that Carla picked up for me while she was running around anyway. That means I have no reason to go anywhere near an outlet, store, or mall.

So, when you ask me what Carla wants and say you'll get it for her...understand why my eye twitches insanely when you ask me to go get it. Four days before Christmas.

So, things were made official. Roy Halladay is no longer a pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays. For most readers in this neck of the woods, that probably doesn't mean a whole lot. Let's face it, even sports fans think athletes are overpaid, and in many cases egoists who care more about the bottom dollar than anything else.

Roy Halladay couldn't be further from that. Yes, he makes a fair tonne of money (his new three year extension is 20 million a season). Compared to the rest of baseball, he's somewhat of a bargain. He's been the highest paid Jay for quite some time, and for good reason. He WAS the Blue Jays for over a decade. Stop and think for a second what the Jays have actually done in the past ten years, and you realize not much. During that time he never asked to be traded. Every five days he went out and gave it his all. Sometimes his all was all Toronto had on the field.

Someone told me last night it was only fair for "Doc" to remain loyal to the team, since they showed him loyalty when he struggled. For the record, it was one season. In 2000 he had an Earned Run Average just over 10 (that translates to 10 runs allowed per 9 innings for non-Baseball folk). He worked out some mechanics and has been the AL's most dominating pitcher ever since. From 2002-2009 no one in the league has more wins or strikeouts and only one pitcher had a better ERA.

However, the Jays are nowhere even close to contending. The light from contenders would take weeks to make it to Toronto...that's how far away they are. Still Halladay never asked for a trade. It was common knowledge he wanted to win in Toronto. It was also well known he was set to become a free agent after next season. Halladay would have happily pitched the rest of his contract in blue and white. Then he probably would've gone to pastures that weren't necessarily greener, but had a better chance of winning. So, in an effort to get some value back and give Roy a more rapid chance of winning, Toronto traded him to Philadelphia this week. The same Phillies team that's been to two straight World Series.

He's going to eat the National League alive, mark my words. He's an old school player who puts his heart and soul into every game and put winning above the all-mighty dollar. But as far as his time in Toronto, Scott Miller of CBS put it best:

It's just too bad that the Blue Jays never could win when they had Halladay, because he gave his blood, sweat and tears to that franchise and to that city and he desperately wanted to win there. For his sake and for that of the franchise and its fans, its sad that it never came to pass.
